World speed roller skating championships, Masterton, 1980

This is the women's race in the 1980 world speed roller skating championships, which were held in Masterton. Speed skaters used roller skates until the early 1990s, when inline skates were used instead. The skaters are in a 'peloton' formation. This is a common technique in racing sports and is used by participants to save energy – those behind the front-runners race in their slipstream.
