Soon after daybreak on 29 April 1864, Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron ordered an artillery bombardment of Pukehinahina (Gate Pā), which had been built by Rāwiri Tuaia Puhirake, a rangatira of Ngāi Te Rangi. It was the beginning of the assault on the . In this photograph taken at sunrise on that day, Cameron is fifth from right, standing in front of the wheel of the gun carriage.
