Story: Political parties

Winston Peters, 1999

Winston Peters, 1999

Winston Peters, leader of New Zealand First, gives the victory sign at the party’s election campaign launch in 1999. A charismatic or visible leader is probably as useful to a small party as significant policy differences to the main parties. The importance of getting in front of the television cameras and looking distinctive was not lost on either Peters, who was famed for his dress sense, or UnitedFuture’s Peter Dunne, whose coiffed hairstyle made him instantly recognisable.
