Story: Empire and Commonwealth

Plaque, Waitangi (2nd of 2)

Plaque, Waitangi

This plaque at the base of the flagpole at Waitangi commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between Māori and the British Crown. The treaty allowed European settlement and set out the basis on which two very different peoples would live in one country – but the plaque highlights New Zealand joining the British Empire.
