Treaty of Waitangi Policy Unit, 1989

From the 1980s the government made increased efforts to develop policies in accordance with the principles of the treaty. The Treaty of Waitangi Policy Unit was set up in 1988 within the Justice Department to advise on treaty settlement issues. In this photo, members of the unit travel by jetboat to historic sites on the Waikato River in 1989.
