During the 1950s the New Life Movement encouraged thousands of people to join the Presbyterian church. Many were attracted by the sense of community it provided in the new baby-boomer suburbs on city peripheries. In 1959 the Presbyterian and other churches helped sponsor the visit to New Zealand of US evangelist Billy Graham. He drew large crowds – such as this one at Auckland's Carlaw Park – and hundreds joined local churches.
