James Carroll with his whenua tree

This cabbage tree (tī kouka) at Wairoa in Hawke's Bay is visited by three distinguished-looking kaumātua. James Carroll (also known as Timi Kara) was born under the tree, which is considered tapu. Carroll was of Ngāti Kahungunu and Irish descent and became a renowned Māori politician.
