Story: Interdenominational Christianity

Unitarian Church, Auckland

Unitarian Church, Auckland

The interior of the Unitarian Church in Ponsonby Road, Auckland, was relatively austere compared to the decor of its Catholic and Anglican counterparts. Its members aimed to provide a church for free-thinking people who disagreed with some of the teachings of orthodox Christianity. Its trust deed stated: 'No particular doctrine, opinions or mode of regulating worship is required to be taught or observed or forbidden to be taught or observed.' This church has hosted and supported many political groups, including Halt All Racist Tours, the Campaign for Racial Equality and Amnesty International.
