Francis Redwood was born in England but raised in Waimea, near Nelson, from the age of three. When appointed Bishop of Wellington in 1874, aged 34, he was then possibly the youngest Catholic Bishop in the world. When he died 61 years later, at the age of 95, he was said to be the oldest. In 1887 he was appointed New Zealand's Catholic Archbishop. He is shown here in his robes of office, including his bishop's cope (cloak), mitre (pointed hat) and staff.
