These tourists are on board the Whale Watch Kaikōura boat, Te Ao Mārama, as it follows a whale off the Kaikōura coast. The company is owned by the indigenous Ngāti Kurī people, who are part of the Ngāi Tahu tribe of the South Island. Ngāti Kurī claim descent from Paikea who, according to tradition, was saved from the sea by the great whale Tohorā and brought to New Zealand.
