This receipt for a suit with an extra pair of trousers from a Wellington tailor totalled £7 13s in 1907 (around $1,100 in 2008) and attracted a 1d stamp duty (about 59c). Stamp duties were applied to many different formal documents and gathered small amounts of revenue on a great many transactions.
