Story: Small forest birds

Antipodes Island parakeet

Antipodes Island parakeet

These parakeets have evolved in isolation on remote, subantarctic Antipodes Island. They have adapted to living in a treeless, windswept environment with tussock and other low vegetation. They are green with aqua-blue outer wing feathers, and have a broader bill than the other New Zealand parakeets. They burrow under tussocks to make their nests.
