As this clip from Country calendar explains, the New Zealand film-maker Vincent Ward looked at the New Zealand landscape in very unromantic ways. For his 1984 film Vigil (called here by its working title, First blood, last rites), he searched for a muddy, depressing, run-down piece of land. He found it at Uruti, in north Taranaki.
