‘Lake Wanaka from the entrance of Makarora’
The geologist Julius Haast made this watercolour and ink sketch on 25 March 1863. His view of the landscape reflected his interest in the rocky structure of the mountains around Lake Wānaka. He had recently crossed the pass which was later named after him – but this view looks south, away from it.
