Peace on Bougainville was maintained by peacekeepers drawn from Pacific nations rather than a United Nations mission. New Zealand initiated peace talks in 1990, and contributed to the South Pacific Peacekeeping Force (1994), the Truce Monitoring Group (1997–98) and the Peace Monitoring Group (1998–2003).
