Calling mourners at a tangi
A woman wails her call of mourning at the tangi (funeral) of former prime minister Sir Keith Holyoake. She is the kaikaranga, a woman who calls visitors onto a marae. The kaikaranga from the tangata whenua (host people) welcomes people onto particular areas. This demonstrates the host people’s tribal ties to the land – Papatūānuku.
