Welcome at Kāwhia

A chief of the Ngāti Hikairo people welcomes Governor General Sir William Jervois and his party at Kāwhia in 1884. In the pōwhiri (formal welcome), the tangata whenua (people of the land) welcome visitors onto their marae.
