Ruawehea’s territory

Kahikatea (white pine) trees grow on the banks of the Waihou River, on the Hauraki Plains. The Hauraki region was home to a high-born Ngāti Hako woman called Ruawehea, who held mana (authority) over a particular area of land. Visitors were welcomed to the area under her authority.
