Story: Papatūānuku – the land
Pregnant women and Papatūānuku were closely aligned in traditional Māori thought. As women give birth to humankind, so did Papatūānuku. Additionally, when a child was born its placenta (whenua) was buried in the land (also whenua), underscoring the link.
