Clutha River at Lake Wānaka’s outlet

The Clutha River/Mata-Au starts its 338-kilometre journey to the sea at Lake Wānaka’s outlet (middle distance). The lake is fed by rivers rising in the Southern Alps (background). The Hāwea River, Lake Hāwea’s outlet, joins the Clutha near Albert Town (foreground), now a suburb of Wānaka.
