Story: Oil and gas

Drill bit

Drill bit

Two oil-drill workers examine the drill bit at the Ealing-1 well on the Canterbury Plains in the spring of 2000. The Canterbury Plains form part of the Canterbury Basin – one of New Zealand’s sedimentary basins that have been poorly explored. The Ealing-1 well, near Temuka in South Canterbury, was drilled to a depth of 1,696 metres, finding good sandstone reservoir rocks but no hydrocarbons.
