Gum-digger’s hut
This photograph from about 1910 shows the very basic living conditions endured by kauri-gum diggers, who were spread throughout Northland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many were Dalmatians who had emigrated to New Zealand for a better life. When the gum trade failed, they moved into other work such as farming, fishing and winemaking.
