Plan for Carnegie Library, New Plymouth
Between 1883 and 1929, thousands of libraries were built throughout the United States, Britain, Ireland, Canada, the Caribbean, Fiji and New Zealand with money donated by American businessman Andrew Carnegie. This plan for a Carnegie Library in New Plymouth was designed by architect Frank Messenger in 1913. From the 1920s a few New Zealanders benefited from Carnegie Corporation educational grants, which enabled them to undertake study overseas.
