Congregation of St James’s Presbyterian Church, Wellington

Niueans were introduced to Christianity and Catholicism by the London Missionary Society in the 19th century. Many New Zealand Niueans continue to worship: in 2003 there were 10 practising Niuean ministers preaching to the converted. However, younger members of the community are less likely to spend their Sundays in the pews. These photographs were taken at St James’s Presbyterian Church in Newtown, Wellington, in 1977.
