Story: Ngāti Whātua
This 1842 engraving by Joseph Jenner Merrett is of the Ngāti Whātua chief Āpihai Te Kawau. While Te Kawau was absent in the 1820s, involved in a long campaign with Waikato tribes, Ngāpuhi under Hongi Hika took their revenge. They devastated much of the Auckland isthmus and dispersed many Ngāti Whātua.
