Story: Ngāti Whātua
Te Roroa people migrated from Muriwhenua to the Waimamaku valley. The ancestor Toa and his grandsons extended their influence further south to include the northern Wairoa and Kaihū rivers. An important 19th-century descendant of Toa was Tirarau, whose village on the Kaipara River was painted in 1864 by William Fox.
