Story: Ngāti Tūwharetoa

Ngātoroirangi

Ngātoroirangi

Ngāti Tūwharetoa trace their origins to the Te Arawa canoe. Ngātoroirangi, the high priest on the canoe, had strained relations with the captain, Tamatekapua. So on arrival he set off inland to claim new lands for his descendants. This carving of Ngātoroirangi is at the Wellington office of Tūwharetoa Ltd Finance Company.
