Story: Ngāti Toarangatira
This map shows the route taken by Ngāti Toa in their journey south to the Kapiti coast and the Wellington region in the 1820s. The first part of the journey, to Taranaki, was called Te Heke Tahutahuahi (the fire-lighting migration). The second part, from Taranaki to Wellington, was called Te Heke Tātaramoa (the bramble bush migration). The entire journey was called Te Heke Mai-i-raro (the migration from the north).
