Story: Ngāti Raukawa

Waitohi’s tomb

Waitohi’s tomb

Many Ngāti Raukawa moved south when, after rejecting Te Rauparaha’s invitation to settle, they accepted the invitation of his sister, Waitohi. This 1844 painting by George Angas is of Waitohi’s tomb on Mana Island. The carving was by Te Rangihaeata, Waitohi’s son.
