Story: Ngāti Porou

Pai Mārire flags

Pai Mārire flags

The civil war within Ngāti Porou was sparked off by the influence the Pai Mārire (Hauhau) movement. Pai Mārire was a religious movement which sought to drive off the Pākehā. The leader was Te Ua Haumēne, and the flag at the top was his personal flag. The word ‘kenana’ (Canaan) denoted his identification with the Jews, a people driven from their homeland. The bottom two flags belonged to Tītokowaru and Pēhi Tūroa, who were Pai Mārire followers.
