Millennium celebrations on Mt Hikurangi

Millennium celebrations on Mt Hikurangi

At 1754 metres, Hikurangi is the highest peak in the Raukūmara Range and the highest non-volcanic peak in the North Island. It was the first mainland site in the world to greet the sun at the dawn of the new millennium. On that occasion, Ngāti Porou held a celebration on the mountain. Here we see Tamati and Amster Reedy leading karakia (prayers).
