The ancestor Rereahu

Rereahu chose Maniapoto, his son by a second marriage, to succeed him as chief rather than Te Ihingaarangi, his eldest son by his first marriage. Some of Te Ihingaarangi’s people still live in Ōtorohanga as Ngāti Te Ihingaarangi. Photographed around 1900, this carving of Rereahu is on the front post of Te Tokanganui-a-noho marae at Te Kūiti.
