Waka kōiwi

Waka kōiwi

This waka kōiwi (burial chest) was found in a burial cave at Waimamaku, near Hokianga. The lizard acts as a guardian. Lizards – real or carved – were believed to act as kaitiaki (guardians), as they were often feared.
