Ngāpuhi land loss

This map, originally prepared for the unpublished centennial historical atlas in the 1940s, identifies in red the land purchased by Europeans up to 1850. At this time, apart from the hinterland of the Bay of Islands and some isolated pockets in the Hokianga, most of the land was still in Māori hands.
