Tūhoe identity, forged in the wars of the 1860s, remains strong. This flag belongs to Te Mana Motuhake o Tūhoe, a group that has been active in highlighting issues of importance to Tūhoe. The group has staged protests against the desecration of important sites (for instance, stopping jet boat races up the Ōhinemataroa River) and was present in force at the march against seabed and foreshore legislation in Wellington, 2004.
