Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Tūruki, 1887

In 1869 at Tāwhana, deep in the Urewera region, the people of Tūhoe pledged themselves and their lands to the resistance leader Te Kooti. He in turn promised ‘I take you as my people and I will be your God’. This bound Tūhoe forever to Te Kooti. Despite the years of death and destruction that followed because of this loyalty, the mana of Te Kooti grew amongst the tribe.
