Story: Ngāi Tūhoe
Toikairākau (also known as Toitehuatahi) was the principal ancestor for many tribes throughout the Urewera and surrounding regions. Many tribes that lived in the region before the arrival of the Mataatua canoe (such as Te Mārangaranga, Te Tini o Tuoi and Ngāi Tūranga) belong to Te Tini o Toi, the collective name for the tribes who are descended from Toi. This ancestral meeting house, Toikairākau, is situated on the Waikirikiri marae at Rūātoki in the northern Urewera.
