The loss of their food-gathering sites, which included more than the places of residence and cultivation specified in the English versions of the land sale agreements, impoverished many Ngāi Tahu. However, members of the tribe continued to collect traditional foods such as eels. This scene is at the Waiwera end of the spit at Birdlings Flat.
