The Moeraki boulders

The Moeraki boulders

The Ārai-te-uru canoe, one of the earliest to reach the South Island, was wrecked at Shag Point in Otago. According to local traditions which Ngāi Tahu adopted, the food baskets aboard were washed ashore, where they remain to this day as the Moeraki boulders.
