Story: Ngā waewae tapu – Māori exploration
Matanginui followed a flock of birds from the Wairarapa, across the Tararua Range and along the Rangitīkei River. He named many places near the river, and finally settled near Rangitoea peak, where his children intermarried with the Ngāti Apa and Ngāti Hauiti people.
