Kōrero: Nelson region
Eelco Boswijk (left) and Mic Dover, organisers of the Marchfest beer festival, enjoy a drink on an aeroplane’s wing at Founders Park, Nelson, in 2010. (Eelco is the son of Eelco Boswijk who set up his cafe at the top of Trafalgar Street in 1960.) Marchfest is a celebration of craft brewing, which uses traditional brewing techniques and local ingredients. McCashin's Brewery in Stoke kicked off Nelson’s reputation for craft brewing in 1981, and became so successful that the Mac's range of beers was bought by Lion Nathan in 1999. In 2010 around 15 craft breweries were operating in the Nelson region.
