Island sanctuaries
Islands are ideal for saving endangered species. Once any pests such as possums, stoats and rats have been eradicated, the natural sea barrier keeps out any new arrivals. Although the Department of Conservation has an interest in more than 200 islands, only the major islands used for protecting species are marked here.
