Koaro (Galaxias brevipinnis)

Koaro (<em>Galaxias brevipinnis</em>)

The Galaxiidae family is the largest family of freshwater fishes in New Zealand. They are found throughout the southern hemisphere – in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile, and Argentina. These freshwater fish come in many shapes and sizes, but most species are small, like the koaro. The koaro can climb up waterfalls and colonise streams and lakes above cataracts. Whitebait fishers are well aware of this ability, as koaro often climb up the walls of their buckets.
