The kōwhai (Sophora microphylla) is an iconic New Zealand tree. It is found throughout the country and has been planted in gardens and parks. Blooms are often associated with spring, although they can appear over many months from late winter to early summer. They attract nectar-eating native birds such as tūī and bellbirds (korimako). Traditionally Māori used the bark for poultices, and infusions for internal pains.
