Story: Ngāti Porou

‘Paikea’

This song, known as the Ngāti Porou anthem, tells the story of Paikea’s journey on the back of a whale, and of his love for the beautiful Huturangi. This version was recorded at the 1964 Gisborne annual Māori competitions and has been slightly sanitised for the occasion.
