Cousins Ana Hato (Ngāti Whakaue and Tūhourangi) and Deane Waretini (Tūhourangi) popularised Māori music. They were probably the first Māori singers to be commercially recorded singing Māori songs. 'Waiata poi', 'Pōkarekare ana' and 'Pō atarau' all became popular after Hato and Waretini recorded them. Their version of Paraire Tomoana's iconic love song 'Pōkarekare ana', heard here, dates from around 1929.
