Climbing fatalities, 1900–2006
The figures for the average number of deaths from mountaineering in each decade since 1900 reflect the big increase in the number of people climbing since the 1960s. The reasons for the decline in the number of deaths since the 1980s are less clear. Factors which may have had an influence include better equipment, heightened publicity about the risks, and improved rescue services.
