Story: Mountaineering

Swagging in supplies

Swagging in supplies

Access to the high alps was difficult, and early mountaineering involved a major expedition. Supplies were swagged in, often with the help of ponies. This group is heading up the Tasman valley towards the Murchison valley in 1890. Malte Brun is in the distance. In the foreground is the famous pair of amateur climbers, Guy Mannering (left) and Marmaduke Dixon (right).
