Story: Modern mapping and surveying

Waitākere Ranges map, 1945 (1st of 2)

This centennial map of the Waitākere Ranges and scenic drive, Auckland, was one of many produced by the Automobile Association (AA). As more people used cars, they needed maps of the road system. The AA, particularly in the early years of automobile use, wanted to encourage car ownership and use. One way of doing this was to provide scenic routes, making driving recreational as well as practical. The map includes things of use to motorists such as tearooms, accommodation houses, tolls and road surfaces. Petrol companies like Shell and Atlantic Union Oil also produced maps for drivers.
