Story: Missions and missionaries

Pompallier's mobile altar

Pompallier's mobile altar

A roving missionary, covering large areas of roadless territory on foot or horseback, required special equipment. This collapsible altar was used by New Zealand's first Catholic bishop, Pompallier, from his arrival in January 1838. It folded down to the size of a suitcase, and greatly impressed Māori congregations.
